Who Is The Greatest In The Kingdom Of Heaven?
It might not be who you would think
Greatness in God’s Kingdom has little to do with what you do for God.
A few days ago, a friend was sharing how burnt out they were at the church. Growing up, they checked all the boxes. They went to all the youth events, church services, and did many serving opportunities. Their parents were devout and very connected to the church they grew up going to.
Yet, here we are, in my friend's adult life and he doesn’t want anything to do with the church, Jesus, or Christianity.
It’s not that he doesn’t believe that God exists or even that Jesus came to die for our sins, but he clearly felt like there were so many things that he had to do in order to meet the mark of being a “good Christian.”
It reminded me how much we as a church put “good works” on the plate of our lives. We spend a lot of time thinking we should be doing this or doing that. Like these good things are going to be metals on our chest like they are for soldiers who have fought in different wars.
We seem to think each good thing will help us be a “better Christian,” whatever that is supposed to mean. What this attitude creates however is leading people to believe they are becoming great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
