What I Learned About Rest From Growing Up On A Farm
3 Lessons that will help you immediately
Growing up, I lived on what is called a dryland wheat farm. We didn't irrigate or water our crops. We depended upon the 12–18 inches of rainfall that naturally occurred. This isn't much rainfall, by the way.
Where I grew up is considered high-desert. The soil there is not overly fertile for growing crops year after year. For this reason, we would plant a crop on one piece of land one year, and then the next let the land rest.
The purpose behind growing crops this way
Now, there is a reason to farm this way. It comes down to three basic things that help make it possible to keep farming and producing the wheat needed in our country and around the world. Here are the three things that happen:
- It allowed the threshed-out stuff (parts of the plant that are left in the field after we harvest the seed) to break down. It takes a long time for this sort of plant material to break down back into the ground.
- This allows the ground to soak up a year's worth of rainwater. The rainwater is good for the soil and helps the plant matter break down into useful nutrients in the ground.
- Creates natural fertilizer from the breakdown…
