Matthew 5 — Setting the stage for the Sermon on the Mount

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. — Matthew 5:1–2 (NIV)

Some people believe Jesus is simply a very wise teacher. They believe that He was skilled in teaching, smart about the things of God at the time, and was a powerful speaker.

While these are all true, Jesus was more than a teacher. Jesus was and is God here on earth. This makes Him more than a wise teacher. It makes Him the ultimate teacher.

In other parts of the Bible, it is said that He spoke with authority (Mark 1:22, Matthew 7:29). This authority came from heaven. It came from heaven because He came from heaven. He even declares it to his disciples:

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. — Matthew 28:18 (NIV)

This is why crowds followed Him everywhere. And this is why the church exists today. But we need to…
