The Gospel of Mark presents a distinctive viewpoint on the Kingdom of God, a significant subject in Jesus’ teachings, with its lively story and pressing message.

The way that Mark presents the Kingdom veers between seeing it as a future promise that has not yet come to pass and seeing it as a current reality that is entering the world through Jesus’ mission.

This two-pronged exposition challenges readers to consider the significance of the Kingdom’s tension for faith and discipleship in the modern world.

The Kingdom as Present Reality

Mark presents the Kingdom of God as an impending reality from the outset. Jesus’ declaration heralds the entrance of God’s reign, “The time has come… The kingdom of God has come near” (Mark 1:15).

Jesus’ miracles, including his healings, exorcisms, and control over nature, emphasize this immediacy by serving as indicators of the Kingdom of God’s imminent arrival.

These miracles are natural expressions of the Kingdom’s presence, where brokenness is healed, and creation is reconciled to its Creator rather than merely acts of heavenly power.
