“Read your Bible every day,” they say. Who are they? Pastors, spiritual mentors, and missionaries. This is a commonly prescribed habit to start doing when you become a Christian.

It’s a good practice. But sometimes we put so much weight on reading our Bible daily that we start to create undue pressure on ourselves to perform the Christian life, rather than live the Christian life.

One of the things that happen with this focus on reading our Bible daily is how we make it about ourselves. We start to think that the Bible is about us more than what it is really about. This kind of thinking can be dangerous because we start manipulating the message of the Bible to fit our needs.

That kind of manipulation can start to do a lot of harm. We find this running through the church on a regular basis. This is when people start using the Bible to promote their agenda. And it can be a very dangerous path to go down.

But the Bible isn’t about you, your agenda, or how you can make the world a better place.
