If you aren’t focused on what’s right here in front of you, if you’re daydreaming about what might be, you really aren’t focused at all. — Mike Leach

I remember the time I met Coach Leach when he was in his first or second season at Washington State University.

My dad and I went down for a game with my oldest daughter and ran into him walking around the athletic department.

My dad and I said ‘hi’ to him as we passed him in a hallway. Not thinking he would stop, but he did. He introduced himself and chatted with us a bit.

We talked about farming, my time at WSU, writing books, and unicorns. All that in a 15 minute conversation.

Sure, it was a few hours before game time, but the fact he stopped to chat was amazing. It was a real experience to cover all that ground in a few minutes too.

You’ve probably heard it a lot about how he can talk about anything. And it sure seemed true that day. He was definitely a unique person.

But the way he stopped to connect with my dad and I was something else altogether.
