But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season… For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction. — Psalm 1:2–3, 6 (NIV)

Righteousness and unrighteousness aren’t topics people like to talk about much these days. Especially in our current world climate and how the church has been polarized by politics, social issues, and contemporary world problems.

Yet, as we dig into the Psalms, I believe God has something to say about all these things and how God’s people are supposed to respond to them. When we consider the problems of the world around us, we need to consider whether we are living as the righteous or the unrighteous.

Focus for a moment. I am talking about the way we see ourselves. Not the way we see our neighbor. I believe this Psalm reminds us how we need to live our lives. For this reason, we must consider what this means for us.

The Righteous

  • Joy in delighting in the Law of the Lord (or the Word of God for our time), meditating on it day and night.
