On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” — John 20:18 (NIV)

Every year, we read and listen to the story of the resurrection. The tomb is empty. Everyone is confused and scared. And then Jesus arrives on the scene. With heaven’s doors wide open and a plant to send his disciples out.

But the resurrection is more than an event. It is the open door policy Jesus creates for his people and others to come to him and experience freedom from their sin. And freedom from this world.

Jesus doesn’t stand at the door only once. He comes when people need him the most. He steps into the most broken aspects of our lives. Where trauma and heartbreak collide to define us until he stands in the middle of it and says, “peace be with you.”
