When We Believe, We Are Crucified With Jesus
“Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified him and with him two others — on each side and Jesus in the middle.” — John 19:17–18 (NIV)
We hear the passion story so often. Every Easter it is played out the week before church. And every year we get to celebrate Jesus's resurrection. It is the power of both crucifixion and resurrection which has changed the world.
And yet, we take the light of the story of Jesus being crucified.
No matter how gruesome your pastor has tried to tell the story of how terrible it looked on film. We can easily miss the fact that when Jesus was crucified he set a new standard for humanity. But we must understand that standard and the reality of it.
And it all starts with the crucifixion.
