John 1: In the Beginning

This book starts where all good books start, in the beginning…

If you have read any of the other gospels, you will notice the Gospel of John starts out far different than the others. And there is a reason for this. John wants us to start thinking of the world in light of heaven.

He understands what it means for Jesus to have come to earth. His view of the events that he had witnessed and experienced was quickened by the Holy Spirit to remember that Jesus was not from our world, not entirely anyway.

And so he invites us into heavenly realms with the start of his book:

“In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” — John 1:1–3 (NIV)

John reminds us that Jesus belongs to heaven. That he was with God and was God. And that he had a hand in all of creation.

Stop and imagine this for a second.
