Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish. — Mark 6:41–43

Christian culture likes the idea of denying ourselves provision and abundance. It is a common theme in the church and in missionary organizations.

People are so afraid of the ‘prosperity gospel’ that they run the exact opposite way and believe the ‘poverty gospel.’ That’s where we begin to hear things like:

“If it is your will Lord, then let it be done… Don’t lead me into temptation… God isn’t a vending machine…”

These are all sayings that we have heard in church settings. And because of this mindset and belief system it’s almost as if the church is afraid to ask God for things.

Yet, Jesus shows time and again that God wants nothing more than to take care of his people and the people who need him most.
