And he called his twelve disciples together and began sending them out two by two, giving them authority to cast out evil spirits. — Mark 6:7

I remember the first time I went out to share my faith publicly with random people. When I was a junior in college I went on a missions trip to San Diego, California and we spent ten weeks working at Sea World and going to the beaches to talk to people about Jesus.

Before we went the first time, the staff member who was directing our outreach shared this verse and prayed it over us. While I wasn’t sure about the whole ‘casting out evil spirits’ part of the verse, there was a boldness that overcame me when it was time to get in the car and go to the beach.

Yet, when we got to Mission Beach, the fear and anxiety of walking up to strangers became real. I imagine this was true for the disciples too. However, there was something that I can look back on that experience and know to be true now.

Jesus Imparts His Authority

Whether it is the disciples or a bunch of college kids on the beach, when we go out to share our faith and connect people with the Kingdom of God, we have received a full helping of the authority of Jesus.
