Jesus Gave Them Authority
The power of the Kingdom of God was given out
I remember the first time I was given total authority over a sporting event as the event manager. It was a smaller sport at my university, but I was given two students to work for me, a radio, and the tools I needed to make sure the event went off.
We had a few hiccups along the way, but when I had to flex the authority of being the event manager, we were able to take care of things. The power came from my boss saying I was in charge, not simply a title.
We see this kind of transfer of power happening in our world today too. Presidents give dignitaries and generals power in the name of their position. CEOs entrust their employees with the power to make business decisions. It is not an uncommon thing.
And so, as we read the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 10, we see this same action happening with Jesus and his disciples.
