My grandfather fought in World War Two. He rarely told stories about the battles he saw or his time fighting in the western front. However, when he did tell a story, there was always a lesson of some kind to it.
Sometime those lessons were very specific, while other times they were general in nature. However, when I was considering this verse, I remember one time when he shared one of his stories.
Once he shared a story about getting ready for battle. He shared how hard those times had been. Knowing that he or his friends might be killed in action.
While there wasn’t an option to quit or turn back, he also said that those he often fought with who survived terrible injuries all fought with a purpose. For my grandfather, he had a collection of photos.
These photos contained family, friends, and the family farm. He held onto it knowing that he might never see them again, but was convinced that whether he lived or died, the family and the farm would remain.
He saw his experience in the war as service and he knew that it might take the ultimate…
