I believe everything we have is given to us by God.

This includes our homes, cars, jobs, children, retirement accounts, etc. If this is true, if these are all blessings from God, then they are not actually ours. We are simply living out of what he has provided for us and our lives.

Now, it took me a long time to come to this conclusion. I grew up on the notion that everything you have in life is completely dependant on how hard you work to get those things.

This was reinforced by my formative educational years too. Whether it was middle school, high school, or college, everything taught us that we had to earn what we wanted.

While I don’t discount the fact that we have work to do when it comes to earning a living, ultimately, the one who provides that living is behind it all. If God is behind it all, then our promotions, raises, and whatever else comes from him too.

When it comes down to thinking about how God provides for us and that everything is his, my life was changed when I read a parable out of the Gospel of Matthew.

The Parable of the Three Servants
