God Opens the Doors to Heaven
Matthew 3: Jesus is Baptized, Holy Spirit Comes, God Speaks
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased.” — Matthew 3: 16–17
Growing up in the church, I didn’t really have any concept for the ‘Holy Trinity.’ My basic understanding of this concept was completely based on one thing: Star Wars.
Somehow, I got it in my head that God was like Darth Vader, Jesus was like Luke Skywalker, and the Holy Spirit was like the force. Oddly enough, a lot of grown adults feel this way about the three-in-one God.
However, this is completely mixed up, and actually hurts the way we can understand and relate to God, all three parts. And before we can take in the fullness of this passage, we need to understand something about God.
