The Gospel of Mark
Experiencing a New Life with Jesus
Mark 2:22
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins. — Mark 2:22
For the longest time, I never understood what this verse meant. What does this mean when it comes to experiencing Jesus and living the Christian life?
About seven years ago, I got a Christmas present that was a brewing kit. It had everything you needed to brew a couple of gallons of beer. After my first batch, I became fascinated with fermentation and brewing.
Shortly after my first batch of beer, I started brewing Kombucha and we started making Sourdough bread. Along the way, we even started fermenting foods. And it wasn’t until I got deep into fermentation that finally understood this verse.
You see, when you ferment anything, there is chemical reaction which causes gases to be released. When doing this with wine in wineskins, the new ones can stretch with the gases, where the old cannot and most of the time tear.
And you lose it all. The wine and the wineskins.
