A comparison with other writers will kill your ability to write.

I was just reading through Medium this morning and started to get depressed. Today’s headlines were getting me down big time. It happens from time to time. And today, it seemed like my feed was flooded with them.

Headlines like these:

  • How I Write an Average of 100,000 Words Per Week
  • How I Upgraded My Home Office During The Pandemic
  • How I Tripled My Earnings on Medium in One Month

These are just a few of the headlines. Yet, I think you get the picture. While I might have 4k followers and am part of the few who make over $100/month here on Medium, its a grind.

I’m lucky to get to 10,000 words in a week. The day I upgrade my home office feels far off in the future. And it feels like a miracle if I triple my earnings in a month.

For most of us, this is true. Yet, we need to remember these wise words by Jon Acuff:

“Don’t compare yourself to other people. If you’re ahead of them, you’ll get too prideful and be tempted to coast. If you’re behind them, you’ll get depressed and want to give up. Just write your own paper.”

Don’t read the headlines this morning, create your own.
