In the last few months, I have realized something about prayer.

I have been in a lot of different church settings. Small churches, megachurches, and everything in between. I have worked for missionary organizations and have been part of groups of men and women who simply love their community.

Yet, there has been something missing when it comes to prayer in these communities that I have been learning a lot about lately. And, I want to share that with you today.

Two Postures of Prayer

I believe we are entering a new season for many of us. As we prepare for something new, I think there are two postures of prayer to understand. There is a “we” mentality of prayer and expectation of prayer.

The “We” Mentality

When Jesus teaches the disciples to pray in Matthew 6, He instructs them to pray this way “Our Father…Give us, Forgive us our sins…” Jesus could have taught them to pray as individuals. But instead, He instructed them to pray to identify with a whole group “us” and “our.”

While we pray for the nation, we posture ourselves as a whole. Our national sin is not directly our sin. But praying this way gives us the power to repent for more than ourselves.
