Every day, I read a quote that encourages me for the day. Sometimes it is a Bible verse, sometimes they are quotes from famous authors or historical figures, nonetheless, I read a quote to help me chase my dreams and be intentional with my faith and life. If you follow me on Instagram, you likely have seen one or two of these quotes I have read.
A few quotes I like best come from one of my favorite authors: C.S. Lewis.
C.S. Lewis — Author and a Pillar of Learning
He lived from 1898 to 1963 in England and was the author of dozens of books. He fought in World War I and was influenced deeply by his experiences on the front lines of the war. Coming back from war, he lost many good friends, but was not deterred from his studies and connection to story.
He befriended many great thinkers of the time, including J.R.R Tolkien who wrote Lord of the Rings and the two were part of a writing collective in England called The Inklings.
He was an atheist who became a Christian in his thirties. And after turning his life over to Jesus, everything changed. The more he learned about God’s Kingdom and his faith, the deeper he went into sharing it with others.
I have read many of his books and often refer back to them. One way he impacts me on a regular basis is how I have kept countless quotes from him. Today, I thought I would share 10 quotes from C.S. Lewis which continue to shape my life today, and might do the same for you.
One: On Failure
“Failures, repeated failures, are finger posts on the road to achievement.” — C.S. Lewis
Learning to get back up after we have failed or after something has not gone our way continues to point us down a path of discovery about who we are and where we are going. He has taught me we all need to fail sometimes.
Two: On Courage
“Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point.” — C.S. Lewis
I still think about the truth behind this quote. Courage is the testing point of virtues. The more I think about this, I realize we find out who we are when we take courageous action. When we decide not to run away from something and step into it even when it scares us.
Three: On Belief
“We are what we believe we are.” — C.S. Lewis
This one really connects with me about chasing my dreams and living the life I desire. If I believe I can do it, then I will do it. I have seen this play out so many times in my life. And have even seen a few big dreams come true.
Four: On Sharing My Faith
“We must show our Christian colors if we are to be true to Jesus Christ.” — C.S. Lewis
This has encouraged me in times where I struggled with sharing my faith. And challenges me to live out my faith on a day-to-day basis. If you are a Christian, we need to be intentional about my faith. Even when we are wrong.
Five: Living Our Faith
“Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.” — C.S. Lewis
This is why I put my faith first on my life plan and in my goals. I want to grow and be intentional here first in the hopes that God will bring blessing and revelation for everything else. If I simply want things of the world, then I will only get so far. If I want things of heaven, God will add to the things of the world.
Six: On Wealth, Finances, and Stuff
“Nothing that you have not given away will ever be really yours.” — C.S. Lewis
I remember reading this and going, “what?” Years later, I understand that the things I own or have are not mine to own or say that it is only mine. Everything on earth comes from God and if this is true, then I own nothing, I am only caring for it. And at any given time, everything I have could be taken away or lost.
Seven: On Writing
“Writing comes as a result of a very strong impulse, and when it does come, I, for one, must get it out.” — C.S. Lewis
Basically, my feelings about writing. I just can’t help it. This quotes helped unlock the door to me discovering how much I desire to write, and how much I love to write. And it helped connect those two things to me taking my first steps into chasing the dream of being and author.
Eight: On Time
“The future is something that everyone reaches at a rate of 60 minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.” — C.S. Lewis
While it is important for us to think of the future, plan for the future, and dream of the future, we will only get there minute-by-minute, and hour-by-hour. This quote shapes the way I look at being present. It shapes my perspective on doing hard work toward my future dreams and goals.
Nine: On Goals and Dreams
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream another dream.” — C.S. Lewis
This is a quote which has become a mantra for my life. I will never stop dreaming or setting goals. And I believe you should never stop dreaming. In fact, this quotes reminds me we are never too late to start dreaming dreams or setting goals.
Ten: Looking Forward
“There are far, far better things ahead than anything we leave behind.” — C.S. Lewis
This one caught me off guard when I read it. And yet, it reminds me of how my wife always hashtags: #TheBestIsYetToCome. It’s true, in the immediate future there are good things available. And in the distant future and future to come, there are far greater things.
