My daughters love unicorns.

My wife loves passive income.

I love trying new things.

So, recently, we started trying out passive income streams to see which one becomes the unicorn and make us some extra money.

Before I share what we’ve tried, let me show you the list we came up with to start.

10 Passive Income Ideas

Look, there isn’t anything new. But, it’s new to you until you try it out. So, pick one be or two off this list and see how it goes.

  1. Investing in dividend-paying stocks or mutual funds.
  2. Creating and selling digital products, such as an e-book or online course.
  3. Renting out a property on Airbnb or through traditional means.
  4. Starting a blog or YouTube channel and monetizing it through advertising or affiliate marketing.
  5. Creating and selling a physical or digital product on a platform like Etsy or Amazon.
  6. Starting a dropshipping e-commerce store.
  7. Investing in a peer-to-peer lending platform.
  8. Buying and holding onto shares of a company that pays out a steady stream of dividends.
  9. Building a mobile app or game and earning money through in-app purchases or advertising.
  10. Creating a subscription-based business model, such as a monthly box service.

So, that’s the list of passive income ideas that you typically see and we are trying out with some friends.

What We Have Done So Far

Instead of giving you the same old list, I thought I’d share what we are doing so far and how it’s worked out for us.

Mutual Funds

Okay, so I’ve been doing this one with my 401k. I make $1,300 in dividends every six months. So, that’s $2,600 in a year. Not a lot. But I don’t do anything to make that money.

Digital Products

I have published six books on Amazon, a course on Podia, and a few products on Gumroad. I average about $150 a month. That’s a grand total of $1,800 a year.

Blog + Affiliate Marketing

I have a blog, write here on Medium, and over on Substack. From time to time, I share affiliate marketing links. From this links, I make about $50 a month, or $600 a year.

Dividend Stocks

I have a dividend portfolio totaling just over $5,000. Thanks to that portfolio, I average $20 of passive income a month. Yes, this is only $240 a year. But it’s free money.

$436 per month for doing nothing

My total income off of these passive income streams is $5,240 which works out to $436 a month. Not bad for not having to work for it.

Final Thoughts

Passive income doesn’t come easy. All sustainable passive income must come with a little upfront work most times.

If you are willing to do that work, then you will be able to start making money.

For example, my books took work to create up front. But now, some sell themselves. While others sell when I drop them in posts. Same with digital products and affiliate marketing.

The mutual funds and stocks all come after I have made some active income. Then I invest that income into those funds. And it is easy to make a little extra income to invest.

So, what is holding you back from creating some passive income streams?
